Pro Bono Eviction Team: Unbundled help for rural Coloradans
Many rural, low-income Coloradans have lost their jobs because of COVID-19 and have had to choose between paying rent or buying other essentials for themselves and their families. This is your chance to help these clients and their families avoid eviction and get back on track as our community deals with the financial impacts of COVID-19. From your office or home you can safely offer clients significant, unbundled services to help them avoid homelessness and the negative, long-term impact of having an eviction on their record.
Volunteer Details: Offer impactful services with a controlled time commitment and convenient opportunity that can be accomplished from your home or office.
Volunteer Training and Support: Volunteer will access the online training page developed specifically for these cases. This page provides an initial training on the laws impacting evictions during COVID, as well as short, concise trainings and cheat sheets for negotiating with landlords, drafting agreements, drafting court documents, and preparing a party for a hearing. These trainings should be done when you reach each step of the case, so they are immediately applicable. Additionally, there will be a weekly, drop-in mentoring period with a CLS housing attorney and the project coordinator will be available for any additional support needed.
Taking a Case: When we get a case we will e-mail volunteers to see who is available. If you are available, we will follow-up with the party names for a conflicts check. You will then be e-mailed the case documents and the client contact info. During the case you will be expected to communicate with CLS staff about the work you are doing through google forms so we can document the case in our system and follow-up if future issues arise.
